St Bride's Anglo-Catholic Parish, Hampton Roads, VA

Lady Richeldis, a noblewoman, received a vision in which she was shown the house in Nazareth where the angel Gabriel announced the Incarnation. Mary instructed her to build a replica in Walsingham as a place of prayer and pilgrimage. According to legend, angels completed the wooden structure overnight in answer to Richeldis’ prayers. This shrine became a major pilgrimage site known as “England’s Nazareth.” It was dismantled during the Reformation, but devotion to Our Lady of Walsingham was revived in the 20th century with the restoration of both Catholic and Anglican shrines, reestablishing Walsingham as a place of deep Marian devotion. ...
