St Bride's Anglo-Catholic Parish, Hampton Roads, VA

St. Peter Claver, born in 1580 in Verdu, Spain, joined the Jesuits in 1602 and was inspired by St. Alphonsus Rodriguez to serve in the New World. In 1610, he arrived in Cartagena, Colombia, then a major slave port. After his ordination in 1616, he dedicated his life to ministering to African slaves, making a special vow to serve them. For 33 years, he cared for the sick, comforted the suffering, and baptized over 300,000 people. He followed his converts to plantations, advocating for humane treatment.
