Fri 7 - Saint Willibrord, Bishop and Missionary
Saint Willibrord (c. 658–739), born in Northumbria, England, was a missionary archbishop known as the Apostle of Frisia. Educated under St. Wilfrid and at an Irish abbey, he was ordained and sent with companions around 690 to evangelize Frisia (Netherlands). In 696, Pope Sergius I consecrated him Archbishop of the Frisians, based in Utrecht. Supported by Frankish leader Pepin of Heristal, Willibrord founded Echternach monastery as a mission center and extended work into Denmark. Despite facing violent pagan opposition and setbacks under Duke Radbod, he resumed his mission with help from St. Boniface and died at Echternach on November 7. ... See MoreSee Less
